Virtually all serious developers of autonomous driving systems, however, consider lidar a critical sensor, albeit one that can only work in consumer cars if someone can solve the ridding of making it far cheaper and more robust than the sensors used by the likes of Waymo and Cruise. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has called the laser-based tech a costly fool's errand, arguing that a capable autonomous driving system can work off of cameras, radars, and very smart software. Luminar is pioneering the use of lidar sensors in consumer cars by cutting the cost of lidar sensors with their technology.
